Visitors to Canterbury have a wide range of accommodation options. There are low-cost inns for those on a budget, and five-star hotels for those who can afford a little luxury. Room rates are particularly cheap for budget hotels and rise quickly for four- to five-star hotels.

Hotels and Accommodation

Visitors and tourists will have no problem finding a place to stay in Canterbury. For families visiting their children at the University, many hotels are within easy walking distance of the campus.

Just opposite the University on Creyke Road is the Academy Motor Lodge, a combination inn and restaurant. You can choose from one- or two-bedroom studio units or self-contained townhouses with up to three bedrooms, and all units are equipped with wireless Internet and cable television, heated towel rails, electric blankets, and microwave ovens. Rates start at $95, making it ideal for families or large tour groups.

For those on a budget, Canterbury has many family-owned guest houses and inns. Just 15 minutes from the College of Education is the Thistle Guest House, a warm, friendly hotel with a homey atmosphere. Easily accessible from the airport and railway stations, the hotel offers guest telephones, wireless Internet, fax services, and secure off-street parking. Rooms start at $50 per day.

Student Accommodation

Students can choose from three major types of accommodation: university-owned Halls of Residence, homestays, and flatting. There are five Halls of Residence:
  • Bishop Julius Hall
  • College House
  • Ilam Village
  • Rochester and Rutherford
  • University Hall

Homestays allow students to board with a host family for renewable periods of one year. The University recommends this for non-English speaking students, who can learn the language faster by staying with an English-speaking host. Most students opt for private flatting after their first year, and the University Accommodation Office offers a frequently updated list of available flats in Christchurch near the university campus.
